Under the pressure of the Allied advance, Camp Vught was hastily evacuated by the occupying forces at the beginning of September 1944, after there had just been time to put almost 3,500 prisoners on the transport to Germany. Soon afterwards the camp was liberated by the Canadians. Camp Westerbork was liberated on 12 April 1945 by the Canadians. The German commander and his staff had left the camp only days before the liberation. Westerbork came under the protection of the Netherlands Red Cross. In Camp Amersfoort the German camp command took to its heels on 20 April after it had been announced that the camp would be transferred to Loes van Overeem of the Netherlands Red Cross. The Canadians entered the camp in early May.
