To make life more bearable, the prisoners tried to organise all kinds of things: lighter work, cigarettes, extra food and material for making objects. There were also opportunities for diversion and relaxation in the camps: they studied, sketched, wrote, there were (prohibited or permitted) lectures, discussion meetings, and prayer meetings. They could also play chess, football, handball and box, and there were cabaret and music evenings. Although this entertainment offered the prisoners a temporary diversion, nothing changed in their hard everyday reality.
