Memorial Centre Camp Westerbork |
The Memorial Centre Camp Westerbork concentrates on telling the story of the more than 100,000 Jews who were imprisoned in this transit camp for shorter or longer periods. The emphasis of the collection is on ego documents: letters and postcards that were written in the camp or thrown from the train, diaries, and recollections written later on.
The centre also has official documents (including transport lists, Lagerbefehlen, camp cards and camp money tokens), objects, photographs, drawings, and transcriptions of interviews with prisoners, visitors to the camp and those living nearby. The original camp administration is divided between the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation and the War Aftercare Department of the Netherlands Red Cross.
